HISTOPATHOLOGY OF ALOPECIA IN HORIZONTAL SECTIONS
Whiting D.A. Baylor Hair Research and Treatment Center, Dallas,
Texas, USA.
This workshop will allow the participant to examine horizontal
and vertical sections of scalp biopsies under the microscope.
The common causes of non-scarring alopecia such as androgenetic
alopecia, diffuse alopecia, alopecia areata or traumatic alopecia,
and of scarring alopecia such as lichen planopilaris, lupus
erythematosus or folliculitis decalvans, may be included.
The methods of cutting horizontal sections and counting follicular
structures will be discussed. These follicular counts and
their diagnostic value in alopecia will be demonstrated.
