SPECIAL PATTERN OF ALOPECIA AMONG CHILDREN IN MOSUL
N. Kusaimi. College of Medicine. University
of Mosul. Mosul. Iraq.
Teaching dermatology in Mosul Medical College & working
as a dermatologist in Mosul city-Iraq for a quarter of a century,
I have met an interesting condition of loss of hair among
children which had not been reported in the literature. This
condition is not uncommon. It affects children (both sexes)
between 3-12 years of age. The parents gave history of patchy
hair loss of few months duration. There was no history of
previous trauma at all in all cases. The condition affects
the scalp only. During examination, single or multiple 1-5
complete linear hair loss patches about 1\2-3 cm in length
& 4 mm in width were found. Some of the lesions looked like
an atrophic scar, others like a thick scar with characteristic
white colour. Sometimes these lesions were misdiagnosed as
Alopecia Areata. Histopathology of these lesions showed atrophy
of the epidermis, with a lot of collagen bundles & fibrous
tissue in the dermis with disappearance of skin appendages.
Many modalities of treatment were used with no benefit. Follow
up of the patients & scientific explanation for this entity,
documented with the photographs will be available at the time
of presentation.
