Numerous growth factors and their interaction with receptors
affect the hair growth and hair cycle. Recently, it has been
reported that pheripheral nervous system has important roles
in the hair growth and hair cycle change, which are mediated
by neuropeptides. Calcitonin gene related peptide(CGRP) is
one of the most important neuropeptides, but the effect of
CGRP on hair growth has rarely reported. In this study, we
examined the effect of CGRP on human hair growth using organ
culture system. We also examined molecular mechanism of the
effect of CGRP in hair follicles and hair dermal papilla cells.
In order to identify the molecular mechanism, we detected
mRNAs corresponding to FGF-7, IGF-1, VEGF, IL-1alpha, IL-1beta,
p53, caspase-3. RT-PCR analysis showed that CGRP induced expressions
of mRNA levels of IL-1alpha in human hair follicles and dermal
papilla cells. In addition, the CGRP inhibited expression
of FGF-7 in human hair follicles.
