B1.1 Diffuse Hair Loss in Women; What
to
Do?
Hugh Rushton London, UK & Gerhard Lutz Wesseling, Germany
Part I: The Basics:
What is diffuse hair loss? How do you define it? How do
you treat it? In this seminar we will look at the basics: the three fundamental
variables; hair density, hair diameter and per cent growing (anagen:telogen
ratio) and how they can provide a specific definition for diffuse hair loss. We
will try to obtain agreement on standardising parameters to define diffuse loss
of hair without loss of follicular units from conditions that involve loss of
follicular density or exhibit a delay in anagen initiation with or without
increased hair shedding. Methods used to evaluate these hair variables will be
covered, as will possible causes. What evidence based diagnostic and relevant
serological investigations should be taken into consideration to solve this
problem? What therapeutic options, specific to diffuse hair loss are available
and what is the implication of poor hair care?
Part
II: How to deal with it:
In the second part of the seminar the
clinical investigations to evaluate diffuse hair loss (pull test, wash test
with or without estimation of hair weight, phototrichogram, computer assisted
phototrichogram and pluck trichogram) will be examined. Discussion of the hair
growth cycle and the different hair root patterns and the characteristic
features of anagen, catagen, telogen and dysplastic hair in relation to
epilating procedures. A practical demonstration of the pluck technique and
correct interpretation of freshly plucked hair roots under different conditions
will be demonstrated. Relevance of the results for further therapeutic
strategies and a discussion of the necessity for additional investigations and
answering relevant questions from the audience will be an important aspect of
the seminar. Audience participation will be actively encouraged.
