P9.121 EFFICACY OF MINOXIDIL 5 % TOPICAL SOLUTION IN THE TREATMENT OF ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA IS NOT INFLUENCED BY HAIR COLOUR

Mulzer K..Rundegren J. Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, Karlsruhe, Germany and Helsingborg, Sweden

Objectives: Analysis of the efficacy of minoxidil 5% solution in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia with regard to hair colour of the user.
Methods: In this open study under post-marketing conditions in Germany, 733 male users applied 1 ml minoxldil 5% solution twice daily to their hair loss region on the scalp for 4 months

Introduction: Due to technical reasons, in the majority of dinical studies conducted in the past, only patients with dark hair have been included. To obtain information on the efficacy of minoxidil in people with blond hair, an analysis of efficacy perception with respect to hair colour was performed in this study.

Results: Analysis of the hair colour showed that 181 of 727 eligible users (24.9%) had black hair, 395 (54.3%) had brown hair, and 145 (19.9%) had blond hair. Due to the low number of users with red hair (6,equivalent to 0.8%)this group was not included in this analysis. After 4 months of treatment, the size of the area affected by hair loss had become smaller in 73.3 %, 65.0%and 66.9%of users with black. brown, or blond hair, respectively. Promotion of new hair growth (rated as "very effective" or "effective")was observed in 68.9%, 59.1%, and 64.8%, respectively. Perception of efficacy within 2 months of treatment was reported for 67.5 %, 63.3 %, and 72.2%, respectively. An improvement in hair density was reported for 785 %, 72.2%, and 75.7% and an improvement of hair thickness was documented for 51.4%, 45.2%,and 47.2%of the black. brown or blond user population respectively. According to the Fisher's Exact Test these efficacy parameters were not influenced by hair colour.

Conclusions: Minoxidil 5%topical solution iseffective in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia irrespectiveof the haircolour of the user. It works in people with blond hair as well as in people with black or brown hair.
