LS1 HAIR CARE – AN ESSENTIAL PART OF PATIENT MANAGEMENT
Gummer CL
Procter & Gamble Beauty Care, Egham, Surrey, UNITED KINGDOM
In general the dermatologist and the cosmetic scientist see themselves as
working in very different fields yet they both have the same interest at heart – the
best quality hair for their patient or consumer. Hair problems are troublesome
for both the patient and the physician, difficult to treat and in many cases
have little or no effective cure. The physician will see the patient for less
than 1-2 hours in their whole life yet the patient must present himself or
herself to the world every day. Consequently, in the absence of cures, there
is often deep frustration on the part of both patient and the doctor. All patients
will have daily hair care regimens that may, or may not, be the most appropriate
for their hair condition. The cosmetic scientist has, at their disposal, a
vast array of hair care products, from shampoos to colors, designed to make
those with a full head of hair look even more beautiful. This skill and variety
of products, combined with a deep understanding of consumers, can be used to
make the most of hair that is less than perfect. It is the exception that the
dermatologist is knowledgeable in either cosmetic science or in helping patients
choose the right products for their daily hair care routines. By forming a
partnership between the cosmetic scientist and the physician we can manage
the patient more effectively and improve their quality of life. This presentation
will look at a number of simple and routine cosmetic treatments to address
the daily needs of the patient. It will cover simple advice and what the patient
can reasonably expect. In addition it will highlight the implications and costs
of various hair care practices. By providing the physician with simple knowledge
and advice about cosmetic hair care products the physician can provide a more
comprehensive and effective treatment for their more challenging patients.
