CD10 is a cell surface metalloprotease expressed by a variety of normal cell types, including lymphoid precursor cells, some epithelial cells, stromal cells and hair follicles. In this study, to evaluate the localization of CD 10 in human hair follicles we performed an immunohistochemical examination in vertical and transverse sections of paraffin-embedded normal scalp skin. CD10 was expressed strongly in lower dermal sheath cells of human hair follicles. However, in dermal papilla cells, upper dermal sheath cells, dermal fibroblasts and epithelial cells of hair follicles and epidermis, CD10 was not expressed. These results indicate that CD10 may be a marker for lower dermal sheath cells of human hair follicles.
